Villa del Monte Winemakers with Ian Cauble
Earlier this week, the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association sponsored a showing of the new movie, Somm, in downtown Santa Cruz. This documentary follows four sommeliers as they study for the Master Sommelier test, putting aside their lives and relationships as they taste wine, quiz each other, and cram for the test. After the movie, Ian Cauble, one of only 133 professionals who have earned the title Master Sommelier in North America and one of the stars of the movie, answered questions from the audience.
Villa del Monte winemaker Neil attended the showing of Somm and was impressed to learn about the rigors of the test, which consists of three parts: a theory examination (an oral examination), a blind tasting of six wines, and a practical wine service examination.
The following evening, Villa del Monte Winery was featured at Viva Los Gatos Dine with the Winemakers. Imagine our surprise when Ian showed up at Viva Los Gatos! It was such an honor to meet him in person and to learn more about his love of wine as well as his detailed knowledge of wine regions throughout the world, principal grape varieties, and wine making processes.
